Contactless Transmission Technology for Industrial Applications

Data and Power Transmission with RoProxCon® - Contactless and Real-Time

Contactless transmission technologies enable the transfer of data and power without physical contact. Based on 60 GHz wireless technology, RoProxCon® delivers real-time data transmission at rates of up to 3.125 Gbps while simultaneously delivering power.

The technology has been specifically developed for industrial applications where reliability, robustness, and low maintenance requirements are essential, even under dynamic operating conditions.

When Conventional Connection Technology Reach Its Limits

Cables, connectors, and slip rings are frequently exposed to mechanical stress. Motion, vibration, and rotation can lead to wear, cable failures, and contact issues.

The result:

  • Unplanned downtime
  • Increasing maintenance costs
  • Reduced system availability

Conventional connections technologies reach their technical limits, particularly in rotating, moving, or modular systems.

The Solution: RoProxCon®

RoProxCon® transmits data and power contactlessly, eliminating the need for mechanical contacts. Reliable transmission is maintained across air gaps and through non-metallic materials, providing greater flexibility in system design and integration.

This reduces wear-related failures, lowers maintenance requirements, and increases system availability.

The robust 60 GHz radio technology ensures reliable, interference-resistant transmission even in demanding industrial environments. RoProxCon® is ideally suited for robotics, rotating systems, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), and modular machinery and automation systems.

FAQs

What is the key advantage of contactless data and power transmission?

Unlike conventional galvanic contacts, contactless transmission does not require a mechanical connection. Data and power are transmitted across an air gap using wireless technologies, eliminating wear, contamination, and contact degradation caused by friction.

How is power transmitted in addition to data?

The RoProxCon® SoM enables wireless data transmission only. With RoProxCon® Hybrid, wireless power transmission of up to 30 W is provided through inductive coupling, allowing simultaneous data and power transfer.

What transmission distances are supported?

The supported distance depends on the product variant:

  • RoProxCon® SoM: 5 mm to 20 mm
  • RoProxCon® Data: 0 mm to 10 mm
  • RoProxCon® Hybrid: 0 mm to 5 mm

Which materials can RoProxCon® transmit through?

The 60 GHz signal can pass through non-conductive materials such as plastics. The suitability of specific materials should be evaluated through application testing.

What is the maximum allowable misalignment of RoProxCon®?

The maximum allowable misalignment for RoProxCon® SoM, Data, and Hybrid is ±2 mm.

What power transfer technology is used in the Hybrid connector? Is it based on a standard such as Qi charging?

The Qi standard is specified for power transfer up to 15 W. Rosenberger has developed its own proprietary wireless power transfer solution for RoProxCon® Hybrid, enabling power transmission of up to 30 W.

Is it possible to power a device on the receiving side, such as a sensor?

Yes. RoProxCon® Hybrid can provide power to sensors and small actuators on the receiving side while simultaneously transmitting data.

Does the RoProxCon® Hybrid connector include Foreign Object Detection (FOD)?

Yes. An integrated Foreign Object Detection (FOD) algorithm ensures safe and reliable power transfer by detecting unintended objects within the transmission area.

What if the power requirement exceeds 30 W, for example for a robotic drive motor?

RoProxCon® Hybrid currently supports power transmission of up to 30 W. Future expansions of the RoProxCon® portfolio will address applications requiring higher power levels.

How compact is the RoProxCon® SoM?

With dimensions of only approximately 12 to 14 mm, the RoProxCon® SoM is extremely compact and ideally suited for applications with limited installation space.

Is the system suitable for RF signal transmission, and if so, up to what frequency?

RoProxCon® supports the transmission of digital baseband signals only. The SoM is based on ST’s ST60 technology and requires an NRC-coded baseband signal with data rates of up to 3.125 Gbps. Direct transmission of analog RF signals is not supported.

What is the latency of RoProxCon®?

The RoProxCon® SoM provides a latency of approximately 7 ns, while RoProxCon® Hybrid and RoProxCon® Data achieve latencies of less than 1 µs. This performance is enabled by the integrated Ethernet PHY, making RoProxCon® an excellent choice for real-time industrial applications.

How efficient is the power transmission of RoProxCon® Hybrid?

The power transmission efficiency of RoProxCon® Hybrid is approximately 80%, with an output power of up to 30 W.
